Parks in Madrid

Overview

Madrid boasts a number of lovely parks which are a great place to stroll in. They’re also loved by the locals who like to escape from the heat of the strong Spanish sun, and by tourists who, tired from a long days sightseeing and shopping, like to sit down and take a breather.

Botanical Gardens

The botanical gardens are a wonderful spot. If you’ve been at the Prado museum you should take a break here. There’s a wide range of flora and fauna in the park, including thousands of different types of trees and flowers from across the globe. The park is organised into different areas with long boulevards along which to walk and information on every plant and tree. If you’re looking to spend an afternoon in this park then you should take the metro to the Atocha stop.

Parque del Retiro

One of Madrid’s biggest parks is the Parque del Retiro. A huge park which is full of trees and greenery and bordered by beautiful entrance gates through which you can gain access. There are elaborate sculptures and statues of Spanish royalty dotted throughout the park, and you can even rent a small boat to take out on the huge man made lake. It’s definitely a great way to relax after a long hot day. The Park del Retiro also contains a wonderfully fragrant rose garden and features romantic walkways for a secluded stroll. If you’re interested in art you may be lucky enough to catch one of the roving art displays that sometimes make an appearance in the location maison en espagne. If you want to take the metro to this park you should get off at Retiro stop.

Casa de Campo

There’s also Casa de Campo which you’ll find by following the river to the west of the city. Another large park, but not as large as the first 2, Casa de Campo provides a number of recreation facilities for those who wish to be a little more active. Here, you can hire a rowing boat and play some sports on the sports courts. This park is a great one to take the kids to, as it features a zoo as well as an amusement arcade which the kids are sure to enjoy. Take the metro to Lago and get off there.

Other smaller parks include Parque Finte del Berro and the Parque del Oeste in the west of the city. Quieter than the main ones, these parks are the perfect place for a quiet slow and secluded reflection.
