The area of Barrio del Carmen in Valencia

Overview

The area of Barrio del Carmen in Valencia is a wonderfully tranquil area of the city which also boasts an interesting night life. Much loved and popular amongst the younger crowd, the area is trendy and relaxed and is located near the old town. The area has many bars and restaurants and a rather bohemian feel to it, reminiscent of other similar areas in many other European cities, with street artists and outdoor cafes.

Atmosphere

Closed to car access, the area has beautiful cobbled streets and was once in danger of falling into disrepair. Some of the older buildings of note have been lovingly restored and converted into bars and cafes. Now it’s a hip, vibrant area where young people from the city and tourist alike flock to dance the night away. The area will be buzzing every night, but head down at the weekends to experience the local party atmosphere. The outdoor terraces along the Calle de Caballeros are wonderful places in which to enjoy a quiet drink in the early evening before heading out on the town.

What to do

During the day there are numerous points of interest that will appeal to those interested in local history and art, and the Valencian Institute Of Modern Art is to be found in this area. Affectionately named El Carme by locals, the area is easily accessible to all and its pedestrianised streets make it a pleasure to still along. Here you can see the Serrano’s Tower which is one of the remaining defence walls from the old city wall. Torres de Cuart, another defence wall, is equally as impressive and the location of these walls will dictate whether you are in the old part of town or the new.

The combination of local history, good food and vibrant nightlife make this little part of town a real delight. If you can keep up with the Spanish and party into the small hours, then you should head to one of the many clubs in the area. Spanish clubs open late, around midnight, and provide a real party atmosphere. If that’s not your scene then there are more relaxed venues including bars with live music or jazz, or outdoor cafes for those just wishing to take in the scenery, do some people watching and drink a coffee after a brilliant Spanish meal or some traditional valencian paella.
