Canalejas Park

Canalejas Park is guarded by impressive stone sculptors of lions and dogs. Inside of it you will find beautiful fountains and a monument for the famous Spanish writer Carlos Arniches. Museums in Alicante

Overview

For those who do not want to spend their whole holiday lazing on the beach there is plenty to do in Alicante. For one, there are a wealth of historical and cultural things to see including the old town, museums and old buildings of note. There are a number of interesting museums in Alicante that those interested in history and the local area should visit.

Museums to visit

One of note is the Archaeology Museum which focuses on regional finds. It originally housed items of interest from local digs in the area and housed in the local government building, and is now located in San Juan de Dios hospital which provides a great layout for the artefacts. It shows ancient items discovered from local digs as well as recent finds, maison espagne, paintings and other interesting monuments. It also includes a number of artefacts of significance relative to the city’s past including tools used during Roman times to items found dating back to Moorish occupation.

Others will like to head to the palace of Santa Barbara to view the Capa artefacts. There are some very interesting sculptures and statues, including pieces by Dali, other local artists and some international works.

The Asegurada houses a great display of modern art from across the country. In modern style, the pieces displayed include modern art work and drawings, statues and paintings and include some of the big names in modern art from Spain and further abroad.

If you are interested in history and in particular in the impact the Moors had on the landscape of the area during the Arab occupation, then you may wish to see the water wells at Garrigos. Fantastic examples of early engineering, the wells had been built to store and provide the town with water. The site has been renovated in the 1800s and can be visited, and interested parties can also see the treasures unearthed at the site, including old cups, water containers and utensils.

Finally, there’s the Museum of Nativity which you can find in the old town. Built during the early 1800s the house shows some interesting paintings and descriptions of the time of the birth of Christ as well as his ministry, produced by Spain’s leading religion artists. Of course, the museum would not be complete without a large nativity set as well as examples of other country’s works.

Monuments in Estepona

Those who aren’t interested in spending the whole day on the beach have a great choice of cultural and historical activities to choose from in Estepona. Church of the Remedy

Head firstly to the Church of Los Remedios. Founded on a spot where locals claim a cross that Christians were using to worship amongst the trees during the Muslim occupation of Spain was found. They built a small structure on the spot and nearby a hospital, which later became a nunnery and monastery for the Franciscans. Later, on the same site, the Church of Los Remefios was constructed in the late 17th century, and it can be viewed to this day.

The Tower of Reloj

Next, you can go to the fascinating tower of Reloj. The ruins on this site belonged to a place of worship built during the time of Inrique the fourth in the 13th century. Like many churches in the area it was built on the site of an old mosque, the tower of which is still visible. The church is the site of many local music festivals which you can attend during the summer months.

Bull fighting ring

Another interesting site is the bull fighting ring – known place of the Bulls. It is still used for bull fighting to this day, as well as other events such as shows, productions and music festivals. It’s a more modern structure, built in the 20th century, and has an interesting shape and many modern features. It is similar to another ring which can be found in Mexico.

The Calvario Hermitage

Finally, head to the hermitage of Calvario, built in the 19th century in a basic style. The tall tower remains to this day, but most of the rest of the structure has fallen apart. It used to welcome the sick and ill who were not permitted to mix freely in society, for example lepers. It was then transformed by the locals into a site for worship for the local community.

The town’s rich history ensures that there is a wide range of monuments and buildings to visit, all with their own interesting stories to tell. Things to see

Head first to the castle (or what’s left of it) on the old town. After the reconquista when the Christian population took control of the town, much of the Moorish architecture was destroyed, however part of the castle has survived. The walls that stand to this day are an important testament to that time and the engineering used by the Moors to protect the city. Only a small part remains today of what was previously an extensive protective network surrounding the town.

Before the Arab conquest of Spain it was the Romans, amongst others, who left their mark. A true gem is the small town known as Rio Verde, which belonged to the Romans and only discovered 50 years ago. A small part has been excavated – the rooms of which you can view today, providing an interesting insight into the time.

Others will love a trip to the older section in Marbella which shows fantastic architecture which has not changed much since the 1500s. It is a charming area with many interesting and traditional buildings of note, and is will liked by many who come to enjoy its unique atmosphere and shop in the boutiques in the area.

Near this older part of town is a very interesting church, known as the Incarnation. Off the picturesque Orange Place, you’ll find this church to be charming, dating back to the 15th century. Likewise, if you’re interested in art then you’ll love the Engraving museum. It shows a great range of local modern art as well as more famous pieces of work from internationally acclaimed artists.

Finally, the nearby town of San Pedro is a good place to see very old structures which date to 500AD, including some remains of an old church or two. Artefacts recovered from this site can be viewed in the local museum back in Marbella.

Cathedral of Saint Nicholas de Bari

The cathedral of Saint Nicholas de Bari is the main church and one of the most important landmarks of the city of Alicante and it is one of the many things that have been left in Alicante since the Moorish times. As many other churches in Spain, it was built upon the ruins of an old mosque. It is built in a style of renaissance with some elements of baroque, which are often seen as one of the best patterns of Spanish style of baroque and location costa blanca. Though there are many Catholic cathedrals in Spain, each one of them is unique and has its own history. Alicante as well as other places and their famous landmarks have gone through different periods of time and experienced a lot, so each of them has its own story. If you love history and culture, places like the cathedral of Saint Nicholas de Bari with its ancient old towns are the best places for you to visit.

The cathedral looks the way we can see it today only since the second half of 17th century. It is more than 45 meters high with its beautiful blue dome. In contrast with other churches nearby, the cathedral of Saint Nicholas de Bari hasn’t been reconstructed in different periods of time, so it has preserved its style more or less homogeneous, so it is a great pattern of Spanish baroque of the 17th century. Only the main front of it has remained since the 15th century, when there was the previous temple.

The cathedral looks very simple from the outside, but at the same time very impressive. Interior is on the contrary very abundantly decorated. What this cathedral also stands out with is the wonderful chapel, which is often assumed to be one of the most beautiful chapels in the whole country. The cloister of the cathedral that has an amazing pattern of adorned wooden doors in the style of baroque, is also something you should pay attention once you visit this place.

You can find the cathedral at the square of Abad Penalva, which is near the centre of the old city and the beach. If you are visiting the cathedral, it is very easy to combine it with a visit of other interesting places nearby. The cathedral of Saint Nicholas de Bari is closely located to the castle of Santa Barbara, the Archaeological museum and the St. Maria’s church.
